ABOUT THE TOUR
Unraveling the Mystique
The Jageshwar Dham is a group of over 125 temples dating back to the 9th to 13th centuries. This ancient temple complex is primarily dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple is located in Almora district, Kumaon, Uttarakhand, India and is managed by the Archaeological Survey of India.
These stone temples hold a significant mythological importance, with references dating back to ancient Hindu scriptures like the Skanda Purana and the Mahabharata. Some historians believe the temples were constructed during the Katyuri or Chand hill dynasties. However, there is no documented proof to support or deny these claims.
The architectural style of the Jageshwar temples reflects a blend of intricate stone carvings, exquisite sculptures, and elaborate designs. These temple groups are unique compared to other Hindu temples constructed after the 6th century. The temples are built using schist stone, and the design of the temples also does not suggest their function as a place of worship.
Jageshwar Dham is also one of the twelve 'Jyotirlingas,' and it is believed that Lord Shiva performed the cosmic Tandava dance here. The complex houses several prominent temples, including the Dandeshwar Temple, Chandi Ka Temple, Kuber Temple, and the Vriddha Jageshwar Temple.
